Flame Retardants

Flame retardants are chemicals that are added to materials to prevent or slow down the spread of fire. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, flame retardants are used in spacecraft and space stations to reduce the risk of fire. The use of flame retardants is particularly important in space, where the lack of gravity can cause fires to spread quickly and unpredictably. Flame retardants can be added to a variety of materials, including plastics, textiles, and metals. They work by interrupting the chemical reactions that occur during combustion, either by releasing water or other fire-suppressing gases, or by forming a protective layer over the material. However, some flame retardants have been found to be harmful to human health and the environment, and there is ongoing research to develop safer alternatives.
