Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites

Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) are a series of Earth observation satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, and meteorology research. GOES are placed in a geostationary orbit, which means they orbit the Earth at the same rate as the Earth rotates, allowing them to remain over a fixed point on the Earth's surface. The GOES series includes multiple generations of satellites, each with improved capabilities and technology. The latest generation, GOES-R, includes advanced instruments for monitoring weather patterns, such as lightning detection, and can provide real-time data for severe weather events. GOES satellites also play a critical role in monitoring space weather, including solar flares and geomagnetic storms, which can impact satellite communications and power grids on Earth.
