Orthostatic Intolerance
Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is a medical condition characterized by the inability of the body to regulate blood pressure and heart rate in response to changes in posture, particularly when moving from a lying or sitting position to a standing position. This can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and nausea. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, OI is a concern for astronauts during spaceflight, as the microgravity environment can cause changes in blood volume and distribution, leading to a higher incidence of OI upon return to Earth's gravity. OI can also be a concern for space tourists or future colonizers of other planets, as the lower gravity environments may also cause similar physiological changes.
