Shield
In space and astronautical engineering, a shield is a protective barrier designed to absorb or deflect harmful radiation, particles, or debris that may pose a threat to spacecraft, equipment, or crew members. Shields can be made of various materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, or composites, and can be passive or active. Passive shields rely on the material's properties to absorb or reflect radiation, while active shields use magnetic or electric fields to deflect charged particles. Shields can also be designed to protect against specific types of radiation, such as solar flares or cosmic rays. The effectiveness of a shield depends on its thickness, composition, and placement, as well as the intensity and energy of the radiation or particles it is intended to block.
