Sound Pressure Level
Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is a logarithmic measure of the sound pressure relative to a reference value. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, SPL is an important parameter to consider for designing spacecraft and launch vehicles. High SPL can cause structural damage to the spacecraft and can also affect the health of astronauts. Therefore, it is important to minimize the SPL during launch and other operations. The SPL is typically measured in decibels (dB) and is calculated using the formula: SPL = 20 log (p/p0), where p is the sound pressure and p0 is the reference pressure. In the space environment, the reference pressure is typically taken as 20 micropascals, which is the threshold of human hearing in space. The SPL can be reduced by using acoustic insulation, vibration isolation, and other techniques.
