Fuel Cladding
Fuel cladding is a material that encapsulates nuclear fuel and provides a barrier between the fuel and the coolant in a nuclear reactor. The cladding material must have high melting point, good mechanical strength, and resistance to corrosion and radiation damage. The most commonly used fuel cladding material is zirconium alloy, which has good mechanical properties and low neutron absorption cross-section. However, under certain conditions, such as high temperature and pressure, zirconium can react with water to produce hydrogen gas, which can lead to cladding failure and release of radioactive materials. Therefore, research is ongoing to develop new cladding materials with improved performance and safety.
